What cars have non interference engines

There are two kinds of car engines: interference engine and non-interference engine. In the non-interference, the distance between the pistons and valves is quite large. When timing belt or timing chain snaps occur and the cam stops as a result, the engine remains intact, hence you only need to change the timing chain or belt.

I have changed many belts in the past on trucks and cars but never knew whether they were interference engines or not. Would one recommend me taking this to the dealer for a belt change knowing it is an interference engine? I will probably change the belt at 90K/6Years whichever comes first. Thanks for all the great info!

An interference engine is a type of 4-stroke internal combustion piston engine in which one or more valves in the fully open position extends into any area through which the piston may travel. By contrast, in a non-interference engine, the piston does not travel into any area into which the valves open.Interference engines rely on timing gears, chains, or belts to prevent the piston from ...
mooseheadm5. I have not seen a modern BMW engine that is non-interference. Since compression has to be so high nowadays, chances are you will not see many non-interference engines from any manufacturer. However, with a Valvetronic engine if the chain failed when the Valvetronic cam was at lowest lift, it is possible that the pistons would not hit.
Hey i have a 1998 Malibu 3.1L V6 and i was wondering if anyone knows if the engine is a non-interference engine or an interference engine? reason i ask if my timing chain skipped some teeth making it so i cant start the car and im going to be replacing it and if its a interference engine then there is no point as sometihng is most likely bent
The lowdown: There are two kinds of engines: interference engines and non-interference engines. Or, as we refer to the interference engines in the trade, motor wreckers. An interference engine is actually a more modern engine design, where the valves open wider and into the path of the upcoming piston. This lets the engine breathe better ...

Dec 06, 2011 · A non interference, or free wheeling engine is an engine where the pistons will not contact any open valves at any time. If you have any engines that use a timing BELT, the Internet is stuffed with info on which are interference or free wheeling.
Some cars, like Subaru, have non-interference engines, which means that if the timing belt breaks while you are driving, there is no damage to the internal parts of the engine. Most timing belts need to changed between 80-100K.

Typical, they probably think you know nothing about engines, and to most people who have a car, they assume that a broken cam belt means lots of damage, so the garage think they can fob you off, you get a repair bill for damage that wasnt there in the first place. and the garage probably cant believe there wasnt any damage, when they take the head off, but they will charge you for the work ...
I have a 2010 60th anniversary 4.7 litre V8 petrol Land Cruiser. Is this engine an interference engine, or a non-interference engine. The speedo reads 195,500 or so Kilometres. I bought it with 165,000 or so Ks. The timing belt should have have been replaced at 150,000 Ks, but I have no means of knowing if it was. Reply

This is what occurs in a non-interference engine. The overall impact of a broken timing belt does depend on the type of engine installed in your vehicle. Engines are either interference or non-interference. Interference engines gain a bit more compression and provide slightly more power. Smaller engines may be the interference type for this reason.
Interference Engines and the Non-interference Engines. The difference between these two types of engine depends on the pistons and valves. If the timing belt on an Interference Engine skids for even one notch, the piston can possibly crash into an open valve and this can lead to serious engine damage.

The Chrysler PT Cruiser was produced from 2001 through 2009. It has a 2.4 liter, dual-overhead cam engine and is available in a turbocharged version. The PT Cruiser's engine is a non-interference type. This means that if the timing belt breaks or slips, the valves will not hit the pistons.
Like the title says. I'm sitting at a hospital bored and was curious if there are currently (or if there have ever been) any non-interference dirt bike engines. I understand that as engines get smaller and tighter it's tough to do, and even cars have fewer and fewer. Just wondering.
